The European Union will threaten Greece with expulsion from Schengen

The Financial Times reports that the European Union will threaten Greece with expulsion from the Schengen agreement, citing officials from the European Commission. According to them, this is the only way to press Athens to comply with its obligations and to guard the external borders of the European Union. "Greece is the Schengen zone’s Achilles heel and arguably the European Union’s least capable state," the newspaper writes.
According to the sources that are not named, any country would struggle if subjected to the refugee pressure faced by the Greek islands. "But its failure to seal its borders and fully process asylum claims makes a mockery of the principle that the first entry state is ultimately responsible for a migrant’s fate," reads the article. Instead, Athens allows migrants to continue their journey and become the problem of another country.
"This dereliction of duty as a European Union member state is the main reason the Schengen accord is falling apart," concludes the Financial Times.
A week ago, another British publication, The Daily Mail, announced that the establishment of a mini-Schengen zone that would not include Greece, Italy and Spain was in preparation.
