Nils Muižnieks has 20 years experience in the sphere of human rights protection. He has been a chairman of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) - a position, in which he has worked hard against fighting racism in the police. "We have received information, that the Greek police doesn’t do its work regarding racist crimes", he says. "We have to duly investigate all connections of Golden Dawn with the police". He considers necessary to put into operation the new government's proposal for a special independent commission to be created, in order to investigate complaints against police representatives. Police representatives will also participate in the commission, but also outside officials who will investigate incidents on a racial basis.

The commissioner called the threats towards immigrants and journalists "a threat towards Democracy" and insists, that the scariest phenomenon is that a big part of Greek society considers such actions as something normal. Society's resignation before such incidents is very worrying, the specialist says.

Muižnieks advises Greek media not to give unnecessary air time to Golden Dawn's manifestations. "This problem is not limited to Greece. Journalists from the whole of Europe are struggling to find the best way to cope with the presentation of extreme parties and movements." According to him, the media should be careful not to advertise for free such kind of extremist organizations. The first piece of advice he gives is not to provide them with title pages and big pictures in the press. This is exactly what they want and hope for greater popularity. The second is to strictly check data on various events, because extreme organizations tend to manipulate the information given. Thirdly, when showing reportages about events or incidents, involving organizations such as Golden Dawn, it should be made clear, that the case in point is not about an ordinary democratic party.
