An earthquake with a magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale rocked Halkidiki today at 07:30 am. Its epicentre was in the sea, at a distance of about 17 km from Paliouri village at the lower end of the first leg of the peninsula.

The quake was felt both in Halkidiki and Thessaloniki, and, according to some media, in Athens.

The geodynamic institute in Athens registered a series of small quakes before and after the strong one. At 06:56 am there was a slight shock of 1.6 on the Richter scale at a depth of only 5 km in the sea around Sozopoli in Halkidiki. At 07:22 am there was another shock of 4.1 on the Richter scale at a depth of 10 km in the sea near Nea Skioni. The strongest earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale and at the same depth was registered seven minutes later in almost the same region.

At 07:33 am there was a fourth shock of 3.2 on the Richter scale and at the same depth, its epicentre being east of the region. At 07:39 am the seismographs reported an earthquake of 2.6 on the Richter scale at a distance of several kilometres to the south, at 07:55 am a quake of 2.4 on the Richter scale and at 07:58 am of 2.5.

In statements for Skai TV professor of geology at the University of Athens Efthimios Lekas ​​points out that the earthquake was felt, as it was double and the epicentres of the two quakes were near the land.

In his words, there are currently no reports of major damage to buildings but it is unclear whether the main quake has passed. According to Lekas the ​​earthquake is not unusual for the region of Northern Greece.
