The director of Aglaia Kiriakou hospital was apprehended this morning. The police arrested Harris Tobouloglou and found on him 25,000 euro in marked banknotes which, according to them, he had received from a third party, a representative of a private company, in connection with the extension of the contract between the two parties.

The company in question, having offered the lowest price in a competition in early 2013, received 190,000 euro to complete a programme for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity, exercise and healthy eating. However, to this day, it has not advanced in the completion of the programme for various reasons. As announced by the police, the arrest was the result of a complaint by the director of the advertising company, according to whom the director of the hospital had asked for a bribe.

The police investigation, after lifting the ban on the confidentiality of communications, revealed that the parties involved had met several times last week.
During the preliminary meetings and negotiations, the parties, involving a third party (mediator), who acted as a representative of the head of the advertising company, and the director of the hospital, had eventually agreed on the payment of 25,000 euro. As initially agreed, yesterday afternoon in Athens, the mediator gave the director of the hospital the sum of 25,000 euro in marked banknotes.

Tobouloglou then gave the sum to his accomplice, aged 40, and they were both arrested. The investigation found in the house of the accomplice a small amount of cannabis and seized it. The arrested persons will face the prosecutor tomorrow on the basis of the charges against them.

Harris Tobouloglou was a long-time member of New Democracy. After the revelations, the party had proceeded to exclude him from its ranks and its press office issued the following message, "Following a decision taken in compliance with the party statute, the Central Ethics Committee of New Democracy deleted from the party registers the name of Harris Tobouloglou for unethical conduct."

Adonis Georgiadis demanded the immediate dismissal of Tobouloglou

Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis urged for the immediate removal of Harris Tobouloglou from the directorship of Aglaia Kiriakou hospital. The Minister addressed the board of the hospital which, in compliance with the statutes, appoints the director, to request his resignation from the post of lifetime member of the management board and to quickly proceed to replacing him. Georgiadis thanked the Greek police for the arrest, pointing out that the Ministry of Health supports their efforts to achieve transparency and fight corruption.
