Crisis Chases Immigrants from Greece

Economic crisis affects families of immigrants who can not find work and therefore can not cover costs or save money, or keep their documents to stay in Greece. This year, the Μigration Οutlook 2010 report of the Organisation for European Economic Cooperation states that unemployment among immigrants have increased and the rate of stable employment have decreased.

It is clear, particularly for Greece that the flow of immigrants is decreasing in parallel with the observed withdrawal of jobs from the country. This is evident from the increase in the number of one-way tickets that thousands of emigrants who have lived and worked in Greece so far bought. If this is confirmed, Greece will register negative population growth for the first time in many years as immigrants in the country are the main factor for its growth.

According to the report, the generation which currently goes into retirement will leave jobs that eventually will not be taken by younger people. The data presented in the study clearly shows the shrinkage of the EU economies. The International Organization predicts that the increase in the working population in the period 2010-2020 will be 1.9 percent, while during the past decade it has exceeded 8.6 percent. It is believed that immigrants in Greece will diminish, but development will shrink too.

The study notes that in most countries, local people and foreigners follow different trends and respond differently to the deteriorating labor market conditions,. According to the data, immigrant women are less affected by the crisis than men, mostly due to the fact that sectors hit by the crisis, for example construction, employ mostly men.

The report reflects the difficulty faced by young people to enter the labor market. It is even greater for young immigrants and according to the organization their likelihood to fall out of the labor market is twice as big. The proposal submitted to the European governments is to make this issue a priority and to take measures so as to avoid long-term consequences of a possible exclusion of these groups from the labor market as this may lead to their social condemnation and social unrest.

One of the main reasons that explain this unfavorable forecast for the young immigrants is that they have insufficient professional skills in comparison with the local young people of their age. So far, the general conclusion of this crisis is that most of those who fell out of the market are of medium skills as opposed to the highly qualified people.
