By a decree of the Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection, Yannis Panousis, confiscated licence plates and driving licences will be returned on the great Christian holiday of Assumption. It is celebrated on 15 August, and ranks very highly in Greece. Nonetheless, drivers who have committed one of the following transgressions, won't see their licences back:

  • drunk driving
  • speeding
  • passing a red light
  • driving a vehicle without insurance
  • driving in the oncoming lane

Decisions issued by courts or other authorities will also be implemented in the usual way.

To get one's number plate or driving licence back, one does not have to pay one's fine immediately. The normal fine collection process, laid down in Article 104 of the Traffic Code, will be adhered to.

During the holidays, trucks weighing more than 1.5 tons will be banned from the roads in places across Greece.
