The minister of environment and public works Giorgos Souflias said that the Greek government will pay a compensation to all victims of the wildfires (on 22-24 August), which destroyed tens of thousands of hectares of forests, 150 houses in Attica. "The help measures will be the same as in 2007. The application of the law needs to guarantee that the forest will again be a forest," also said he.

In August 2007 victims of the fire were 65 people and 200 thousand hectares of forests were burnt.

The government is promising about a compensation of €750 per square meter for all completely burnt hoses and €450 per square meter for partially burnt houses. Affected farmers will be compensated as well.

Also, measures will be taken for the floods and erosion of the soil in the burnt territories. New firefighting paths will be build in the forests and also planting new trees should be considered. The affected territories will be supervised via satellite, so that there will be no illegal housing development.

At this stage the foreign air forces, which were sent to assist in the fire fight, are in high alert. They are two Italian, 4 French and one Turkish airplanes and one helicopter from Cyprus.

The Civil Protection Services are following the situation in the regions and in case of a need, all forces will react immediately. At high alert are also the naval forces around Porto Germano, which are ready to evacuate everybody if needed - two naval ships have been stationed there.

The affected regions have electricity and water supply but the there are still problems in all household, which will be solved in the following days.
