Today at noon, a Bulgarian worker died in a fire in an abandoned building of the Papakostas freezing plant near Volos. Another Bulgarian with 95% burns, who is in serious condition, has been hospitalized; the raging flames slightly harmed two more Bulgarians. They saved themselves from the flames by escaping to the adjacent slope. There could have been more people in the burnt building.

According to eyewitnesses, the Bulgarian Roma men were cutting iron in the old building to sell it afterwards. The fire broke out in the polyurethane coating of the building for unknown reasons and the acetylene bottles or the petrol in the tanks of two old cars that were there caught fire too. The flames quickly enveloped the building, it burnt to ashes and its roof collapsed. The authorities are still unable to determine whether the burnt cars belonged to the Bulgarians.

The man who perished had been inside the plant when the fire broke out. When he escaped he was burning like a torch, he took a few steps and fell down dead. The man with 95% burns received first aid from the firefighters who immediately sprayed foam on him. He is in the emergency ward of the local hospital, undergoing infusion therapy and his condition is critical.

Currently the fire is under control and the causes of the tragedy are being investigated.
