There was a new terrorist attack in the center of the Greek capital. This time the bomb was placed in the heart of Athens – in front of the monument of the Unknown Soldier only several meters away from the Parliament.

Minutes before 08:00PM a strange voice called in Elefterotipia newspaper and warned that in the garden about 15 meters away from the guards of the Parliament is placed an explosive which will explode in 17 minutes. The bomb was placed in a trash can located about 20 meters away from the Parliament’s guards. It exploded two minutes earlier than the time announced in the message. The police managed to evacuate the people from the area and there are no victims. The material damages are insignificant – broken windows of the surrounding buildings. Minutes after the attack the secretary of the parliamentary group of the governing party PASOK, Christos Papoutsis announced that this attack is very concerning and is directed towards the democracy. Police is investigating the records from the cameras, all the streets around the Parliament are closed.

For the first time the terrorists are committing a bombing attack in such a busy area and in this hour when the traffic of people is very big. At the same time in the Parliament members were in session. “The democracy cannot be terrorized” said Prime Minister George Papandreou who arrived at the Parliament after the explosion. “They want to spread panic and fear in our lives, but this will not happen. Athens is an opened and calm city and it will stay like this”, said Minister of Civil Protection Mihalis Hrisohoidis, who also arrived at the place of the attack.

Throughout the night there were two more threats for bombs place on Syntagma square and in the Megali Vretania hotel. Both of them turned out to be false. The last terrorist attack in Athens was only few days ago, on December 28th when a bomb exploded in the building of the National Insurance company and destroyed an entire floor of the building. The responsibility for the attack was taken by the famous in the past few months terrorist organization “Conspiracy of the fiery nuclei”. The police this time is again looking at the same terrorists.
