The biological mothers of illegally adopted babies searched for in Bulgaria

The Greek police have detected another case of babies illegally adopted by a Greek Roma couple, who illegally received aid for parents of many children. They presented as their own three children, who are now 6-7 years old, but a recent DNA testing has revealed that they are not their biological parents. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated against the Roma, two other people being under investigation as well. One of them is a lawyer, the other is also a Roma and they were both intermediaries in the "legalization" process of the children.

The police department in Serres has initiated the investigation of the case having received information about the circumstances. The investigation took the police to a Roma camp near the Diavata neighbourhood in Thessaloniki, where the 38-year-old man and his 35-year-old wife were living. They have three other biological children in addition to the three illegally adopted ones.

According to police sources, the Roma presented as their own three children, namely two boys and one girl, although they have no blood relation with each other. One of them is suffering from a kind of mental retardation for which the Roma have submitted an application for social benefits and which the competent social services have not yet examined.

Sources say that the biological mothers of the three children are of Bulgarian origin. Through third parties, the mothers had established contact with the candidates to "adopt" the children and sold them for a hitherto unknown amount. The trading of the babies took place between late 2008 and October 2009, a few days or months after their birth.

The police investigation has revealed that in May 2012 the Roma had managed to secure a court judgment for the recognition of the children, which they had subsequently submitted to the Department of Civil Status. All this had happened with the help of the lawyer and the other Roma who committed perjury in court in their favour.

The pre-court file shows that from 2013 to 2015 the Roma couple have received aid as parents of many children, namely of six children, amounting to 11,000 euro. The authorities are still clarifying the exact amount received in the form of illegal aid.

The documentation will be sent to the prosecutor, who will decide on the future fate of the three children. The charges against the Roma and their accomplices include fraud, illegal adoption, obtaining a certificate with false content, committing perjury and making false statements.
