It is expected that today bad weather will hit Greece again with intense rainfall, storms and snow in mountainous and hilly areas. Temperatures will drop and the wind at sea will reach 8-9 on the Beaufort scale.

The ferry line Zakynthos - Kilinis is closed due to strong winds and the ban on departure will be in force until 09:00 pm.

In northern Greece, the problems caused by the return of the snow have already started. In Pella the circulation of motor vehicles on the road Kerasia - Voras ski centre requires the use of tyre chains. In Kilkis, the Lipsidrio - Fanario road remains closed due to landslide and as the section will remain closed for a long time.

Today Thessaloniki woke up to a strong northwest wind, humidity of 66% and a temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. The strong gusts of wind have brought down trees in Stavroupoli, Oreokastro, on Dodekanisou Street as well as on the old highway to Kilkis, near the Tania hotel, where an electrical cable has been brought down as well.

The situation is similar in Kilkis, Katerini, Edessa, Veria, Serres, Kastoria, Grevena and Florina. Air humidity there is 66% too and temperatures reach 6 degrees Celsius; it is cloudy and raining in places.

It is also cloudy in Polygyros where the temperature is lower, 4 degrees Celsius, and air humidity is 88%.

Bad weather will continue tomorrow, Tuesday. It will be cloudy and there will be rainfall and storms in eastern and southern Greece, whereas it will snow in the mountainous parts of Crete. From time to time, these events will be intense on the Cycladic Islands, the Dodecanese and on the southernmost islands of the Aegean. The temperature will remain unchanged. The wind will reach 5-6 on the Beaufort scale in southeast Greece, 5-7 on the Beaufort scale in the rest of the country, 8-9 on the Beaufort scale in the Aegean Sea and it will probably subside in the evening.

Ski resorts in the region of Macedonia are operating

It is expected that it will snow there today too. The winter resorts 3-5 Pigadia, Pisoderi and Kaimakchalan are operating in full force. The double lift in Vassilitsa is temporarily not operating due to strong winds.

The highest ski track in Greece, Kremasi (in Kaimakchalan), will be operating throughout the week, offering good snow quality.

Caring for the homeless

In Thessaloniki, four structures provided by the municipality are already available to homeless people in order to protect them from the cold. Two of them will be available until Thursday, from 08:00 am to 06:00 pm. These are the 2nd centre for the elderly (35 Langada St., first floor, tel.: 0030 2310514456) and the 5th centre for the elderly (17 Alexandrias St., ground floor, tel.: 0030 2310820110).

These two centres will function in parallel with the existing structures that provide services throughout the year, namely the hostel for the homeless in Thessaloniki municipality, which operates in cooperation with the NGO "Arsis" (13 Andreou Georgiou St., tel.: 0030 2310528811), from 05:00 pm to 11.00 am the next day, and the day centre of Thessaloniki municipality, which operates in cooperation with the NGO PRAKSIS (62 Monastiriou St., tel.: 0030 2310527938) from 10:00 am to 08:00 pm.

In addition, the Organization against Drugs (OKANA) and the NGO PRAKSIS will also continue their activity called ‘street workers’ to find homeless people and provide them with sleeping bags and blankets.
