Anarchists defile the Greek flag

Unknown individuals loaded a video on an anarchist web page showing anarchists burning the Greek flag and hurling Molotov cocktails and stones at police officers in front of the Athens Polytechnic.

The video shows episodes from the evening of Holy Wednesday, which took place in the neighbourhood of Exarcheia.

Kimonas Hatzimbiros, an academic from the Metsovion National Polytechnic, talked about the turning of the Polytechnic into a hotbed and refuge of anarchists. "It is both a hideout, and a place for the manufacturing of materials used outside the premises of the Polytechnic. These are enclaves within the institution. They have been responsible for the situation for years," he said, and added that the executive should deal with the problem.

Panousis: "They want victims"

The deputy interior minister in charge of public order, Yannis Panousis, warned in an interview with Real News that anarchists want victims in an attempt to revive the times of December 2008.

"The anarchists want someone to perish, to recreate December 2008, although the Grigoropoulos case was an entirely different kettle of fish. Their demands are not the usual ones. They are political. And society cannot negotiate with terrorists,"said Panousis.

He urged the prime minister to take a stand against a minority inside SYRIZA and move with firm resolution to restore public order and security.

"Now is the turn of Alexis Tsipras. Only the prime minister can solve the problem by imposing a firm political stance. Will he play with 4% of ‘furious’ ones, or with the other 32% who voted for him, i.e. the serious, conservative and progressive citizens? The question is who he will walk with and who he will abandon," says the deputy minister.

Panousis says that his resignation is not out of the question: "If the current uncertainty in terms of policies goes on, my presence in the ministry won't make any sense. I know what a ‘velvet divorce’ is."
