On Friday afternoon, a group of youths attacked Athens Mayor George Kaminis, who, along with his wife and two young children, attended the show "A Christmas Story" at Gazi Technopolis. Kaminis inquired about the opening of the new Athens Museum of Industry on 27 January, and, just before he left, about 15 youths attacked him in front of his children.

Speaking on Mega TV about the incident, the Mayor said he would defend legality in all directions. "I will not bow to any threats. Let them throw yogurt at me, let them inveigh against me, I will not hide," said Kaminis. He added that the people who attacked him were reviling him, calling him an informant for Nikos Dendias and threatening him that he would not be able to move freely. According to the Mayor, the stakes are very high - the democratic legitimacy and the Constitution - and he will not hide, but will personally go and fight. On Friday morning, Kaminis told Athens 9.84 Radio that people need to "regain" public space.

PASOK condemned the attack against the Mayor of Athens and his family. In a statement, the party said that such actions undermine democracy, which is extremely necessary to the country in this period, and all political and social forces should condemn this violence together.

In turn, the Athens Municipality said that the attack against George Kaminis, at a time when he and his family were visiting the cultural centre of Technopolis in Gazi, was absolutely unacceptable. In his statements to the media in Athens, the Mayor emphasised that he accepts all kinds of protests within a free democratic dialogue, but not this kind of threat in the presence of small children. He added that these actions did not frighten him, and he would continue to perform his duties without fear, taking into account only the interests of the citizens of Athens.
