Announcements of a shady affair connected with an offshore company and the purchase of a flat downtown in Athens by the former minister from the PASOK government Akis Tsohadzopoulos shocked again society and politicians.

The public prosecutor involved in the case will investigate whether the purchase is connected with tax or other infringements while the Control Service will find out if the money for the formerpensive flat on 33 Dionisiu Aeropagitu Str. has been legally gained. The former minister states he bought the flat with a bank loan.

The real estate agent Kozmas Teodoridis estimated that the commercial value of the 3-floor building is around 10 million Euros. The estimation for Mr. Tsohadzopoulos’s flat situated on the second floor on of 210 sq. m, for the small suit with a terrace under the roof on an area of 201 sq. m and for several premises in the basement is considerably lower, stated Alpha TV. The Dionisiu Aeropagitu street is the second expensive street in Athens after Irodos Atikos and the fair value of a real estate square meter is around 7000 Euros while the market value according to the agents is 25 000 Euros.

An owner of a 128 sq. m flat in the same building rents it for 2500-3000 Euros per month which indicates that the Tsohadzopoulos family has been certainly paying a lot more for their twice as large flat from 2007 to April 2010.

According to the authorities a real estate agent who was engaged in the sale of the Vatoped monastery properties is involved in the deal. His company bought the flat in 1999 and in 2001 sold it to an offshore company headquartered in Wyoming, USA. The offshore company has rented the flat and the other premises to Tsohadzopoulos family in 2007 and in April 2010 the wife of the former minister bought the flat for 1 550 000 Euros. The purchase was made only a day before the vote for taxation of offshore companies’ property. This week the Transparency Commission at PASOK will examine the publications in the mass media and will call the former minister for explanation if necessary.

Currently the incomes of the former senior official from the governing party PASOK are being investigated. According to the preliminary information the wife of Mr. Tsohadzopoulos is in unpaid leave since October 2008 and has no income since then. The last tax form of the former minister shows that the annual income of the family is formed by his 85 000 Euros, 23 000 Euros of his wife and 142 000 Euros in bank accounts. In 2007 the family had declared its ownership of six real estates on Evbea island, in the region of Corinthia and Attica.

The former companions of Mr. Tsohadzopoulos from the PASOK government and the high officials left the former minister on his own after the announcement of the shady ways of purchasing the flat downtown in Athens by his wife Viki Stamati. The spokesman of the government Georgios Petalotis stated that there will be mercy for no one. He also said that the rule of the government is „nothing in the shadows” concerning politicians as well as residents and if the juridical authorities find anything inappropriate it should be clarified.
