The match between the teams of Greece and Argentina in Group C of the World Cup tournament ended with score 0:2. Argentina’s victory ended the dreams of the Greek nationals to rank in the next phase of the tournament. Despite the very good game and the high level of defence the Greeks failed to achieve the goal they had set. Not to allow their opponent to score. They started the game entirely devoted to this task and at the beginning it was obvious that this is not impossible. The players were closer to realizing their dream. The chance to make it seemed real more that Alexis Tzorvas proved several times that the net of Greece was perfectly kept... Decisive for the outcome, however, were the goals Demichelis and Palermo scored during the second half.

Greece began with a very good game. The defence, which the nationals showed was just as what they had promised. Tzorvas and the defenders saved the ball from falling in the net by the shots of the “star” team in the first half of the game. They were very concentrated and played with zeal.

Argentines began trying to score from the 10th minute. Then the dangerous Leo Messi reminded his presence... However, the Greek defence managed to block his attack on time. The Greeks had a great chance for a goal in the 14th minute. Georgios Samaras turned to the net of the Argentine goalkeeper, but the defence stopped his pass. The next dangerous moment for the national team was during the 19th minute. The Argentinean Veron sent the ball toward the net of Tzorvas but the last skillfully pushed it aside. The player Milito had very good chance to score but the ball hit the body of Vindra, which was near the Argentinean.

Katsuranis missed a great chance to score almost at the net of the Argentinian goalkeeper in the 39th minute.

Minutes before the end of the halftime Veron made another attempt to score. It again, however, failed because Tzorvas succeeded to remove the ball as skillfully as before. The first half ended 0:0 and with more than 8,000 Greek fans enjoying the success of Greece at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The second half started with a very strong game from Greece. Already in the first minute Samaras tried to score. Unfortunately, the attempt was not successful, but gave the lead to the Greek team. The star was again Tzorvas who managed to save the ball from the strong attacks of the “super stars”. Leo Messi tried to score but Tzorvas removed the ball. Goal of Greece scored Demichelis during the 31st minute. Then followed successive attempts of the Argentinean team to score. Messi passed the ball with a strong kick to the net of Tzorvas but the beam saved Greece from a second goal and score 2:0. Minutes later, however, the situation changed. Palermo scored the second goal of Greece and the dreams of the team for further classification were .... buried. The result was 2:0.
