Police authorities in the Greek city of Kavala arrested a 63-year old Greek, after a complaint was made that he has been abusing sexually a 9-year-old girl from Bulgaria for three years.

Accompanied by her aunt, the girl went to the police station in Kavala and reported the actions of the 63-year-old Greek, who was married to the child's grandmother.

The girl, who lives in Bulgaria with her mother, regularly visits her grandmother, who has been living in recent years with the 63-year old Greek in the village of Lydia, Kavala Municipality.

According to statements made by the head of the police station in Kavala, Kostas Simoudis, the girl, with the help of a psychologist, revealed that the 63-year-old Greek has been raping her for three years, since she was 6 years old, and she has not shared this with anyone until now.

During the search of the detainee's home the police found pornographic material.

The forensic doctor confirmed what the 9-year-old girl said.

Forensic doctor Nikos Tsifnidis from the Office of Forensic Medicine in Komotini, who examined the girl, found injuries to her genitals, which testified to long-term sexual abuse.

The 63-year-old man was brought before a prosecutor to defend himself, and the prosecutor and the case investigator decided unanimously to keep him in custody.

Lawyers in Kavala refused to take his defence, so he was appointed a public defender.
