75% от последователите на Нова демокрация подкрепят прякото избиране на нов лидер на парията, а 70% от членовете й ще се явят пред гласоподавателните урни в деня на изборите

Greek press has defined the ongoing competition for New Democracy leader as an internal party thriller. After loosing the governmental elections the right party is in the middle of reorganizing. In case none of the candidates gains the percentage that the law requires, the vote will be repeated for those with highest results, for whom a research by the newspaper “The Investor’s World” predict to be the former Foreign Affairs Minister Dora Bakoyanni and the former Minister of Culture Antonis Samaras.

The survey was conducted two weeks prior to the party’s extraordinary congress. Asked “Who do you want to win the elections for New Democracy leader?” vast majority answered that they prefer Dora Bakoyanni (35.7%) to the rest of the candidates- Antonis Samaras (27.2%), Dimitris Avramopoulos - former Health Minister- (17.1%), and Panaiotis Psomiadis- mayor of Thessaloniki (89%).

Should a second round be conducted, the same sample predicted 42.9% for Dora Bakoyanni, versus 35.5% for the former Foreign Affairs Minister. The difference between the two major opponents is shrinking substantially when the same question were asked voters from New Democracy. 35.8% will cast their votes for Bakoyanni and 34% for Antonis Samaras. Percentage for Dimitris Avramopoulos drops slightly to 16.8% and Panaiotis Psmiadis gets 12.1%.

Voters among New Democracy members are expecting a dramatic outcome. If a second round takes place, the difference between Bakoyanni and Samaras is miniscule- 43.1% to 42.4%. the survey investigates other possible scenarios as well. In case the second round brings against each other Antonis Samaras and Dimitris Avramopoulos, the ex-Health Minister is significantly ahead of his opponent with 11 points. In the Bakoyanni- Avramopoulos scenario, voters put in front Bakoyanni with 41.8% to 31.0%.

It is worth noting that 75% of New Democracy followers are in favor of the leader-election procedure, while 70% of the members will cast their votes in the election day tomorrow.
