The Political Union of Women in Greece was established in 1994, when only eight women were elected in national elections and no woman was elected in the European Parliament elections. Much water may have run under the bridge since then but few things have changed. In the last parliament, the participation of women did not surpass 17% of all seats. Theta Diamantoupoulou stressed in conclusion that the problem with admitting women in politics is not only Greek. She gave the example of the Scandinavian experience where although parliamentary seats are equally split between men and women - 50/50, there is not a single post occupied by a woman in key ministries such as economy, finance or development.
