Why some Greeks haven’t voted

The disappointment of the major political forces is more pronounced in older age groups. This was the position of the 58-year-old Constantine. She is an accountant in a private company and expressed her dismay at the ultimatum, which the Prime Minister George Papandreou brought two weeks before the elections for mayors and regional governors. She did not like the "either vote for PASOK in the local elections, or there will be early elections". On the other hand, the New Democracy alternative and the other smaller parties also did not seem attractive. "Bluff or not, the blackmail was counterproductive in my opinion. I do not want to participate in elections, which put me fait accompli, before they have even started," said Constantine.

"I decided not to vote because I am against George Papandreou, the policy he implements, against pensions cuts, against the VAT increase, against the Memorandum of financial support." This is the statement of the79-year-old Marigo who has been active member of PASOK more than 30 years. She said she had been working for many years in the regional office of the Socialist Party, that she participated in strikes and protests while she was young. She deeply believed in the socialist idea then propagated by Andreas Papandreou, the father of the current Prime Minister. "Now I see that everything was in the wind. I'm desperate seeing where they brought Greece to. This is not what we fought for the whole of our lives." She does not believe that voting makes sense. The retired woman thinks the way of Greece has long been destined and all the promises coming from politicians are fudge. "I refuse to participate in this circus called elections. After so many years now I see that our freedom and the vote are fictitious. They have no weight."
