"We are open for a dialogue on any particular issue related to the country’s life," said the new Minister of Finance of Greece, Evangelos Venizelos in his first official statement from the new post. He assessed the proposal of the Prime Minister George Papandreou to take the post of Minister of Finance as an honour but as a challenge too and said he accepted it after serious thought and some hesitation.

The first priority is the country's economic recovery and the foreign debt. Our ideas in this direction do not differ practically from those suggested by other European oriented parties in Greece, said the Minister of Finance. We need optimism and even by force of habit in the beginning, he said, adding that the new government would manage only with the help of the Greek people. Venizelos said he insists on dialogue and consensus with the political opposition and with society, especially in the face of the movement of discontented.

"We want political understanding, not as an end in itself, but to find the public consensus anew." Venizelos even stated that he thinks about each unemployed person in the country and for each retiree whose pension was cut. "Our message is that we are strong and go ahead, open to consensus and determined."
