There are no common European rules for private healthcare

Delayed payments on the part of the state are another major problem faced by private hospitals in Greece. According to President of the Greek Association of Private Hospitals Grigoris Sarafianos, the obligations of the state healthcare system to private hospitals date back to 2007. In particular, they amount to 350 million euro for the period from 2007 to 2011, 60 million euro for 2012 and 200 million euro for 2013. From the beginning of 2014 to this day, only the sums for healthcare services to the amount of 54 million euro were paid.

In addition, the Association insists on signing the new contracts for services to those insured in the public system with all private hospitals together, rather than with each one separately, as is the intention of the Ministry of Health. A week ago, Sarafianos said clinics and diagnostic centres would stop working in protest, but this has not happened so far.

Although similar, the problems in each country are specific and it is difficult to make a decision at the European level, said Erich Sieber.

"We have some suggestions that we will submit to the European authorities and we hope to find solutions to the problems at the national level in each country. As you can see, they cannot be solved at the European level because the healthcare systems are determined by the governments of the member states. Therefore, the solutions must be tailored to the needs of each country," he said.
