On Wednesday, Greek Minister of Productive Reconstruction, Environment and Energy Panagiotis Lafazanis will be in Sofia in connection with the Vertical Gas Corridor project. The energy ministers of Greece, Bulgaria and Romania will meet in the Bulgarian capital to discuss the construction of the interconnector that will carry natural gas from the pipeline operated by the Greek company DESFA and from the TAP pipeline to Bulgaria and Romania. TAP is still under construction and it is due to begin to carry gas from Azerbaijan to Europe in 2019.

In connection with the meeting, Minister Lafazanis today met with Ambassador of Bulgaria in Athens Emilia Kraleva, as reported by the Greek news agency AMNA.

The Greek-Bulgarian IGB interconnector will be a key part of the Vertical Gas Corridor and it will connect the Greek town of Komotini with Stara Zagora.

The plans are for it to carry 3-5 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year. The construction of the interconnector is scheduled to start in early 2016. It is one of the priorities of the European Union's energy politics.

One of the issues that will be discussed during the tripartite meeting will be the financing of the project.
