Construction company Lamda Development, owned by the richest Greek (according to Forbes) Spiros Latsis is about to acquire the old Athens airport in the seaside neighbourhood of Glyfada. Only his company took part in the tender announced by the Greek Privatization Agency, submitting a joint offer with a fund from Abu Dhabi, Chinese Fasun and private European capital. The investment is worth 7 billion euro.
The Management Board of the Privatization Agency will meet in the coming days to assess the technical design, the financial plan and the guarantees offered by Lamda Development. It is expected that the evaluation procedure will continue for two weeks.

"Some of the biggest capitals of the world have decided to invest in Athens and thus have demonstrated their confidence in the Greek economy. Our investment in the old Athens airport will create tens of thousands of jobs, provide an opportunity for the development of elite Greek entrepreneurship and will transform the environment in Attica by creating a green park area of 2 million square metres," said Executive Director of Lamda Development Odysseas Athanasiou.
The ambition of architects, investors, builders and entrepreneurs is to create in Greece a unique mega complex of buildings, sports facilities, cultural centres, shopping areas and green space, offering a wide range of services and world-class quality.
In recent years, Forbes magazine has invariably indicated Spiros Latsis as the richest Greek with investments in banking, shipping, transportation, the oil industry and construction. Last year, the son of Captain Yiannis Latsis withdrew from Eurobank EFG, which he owned, giving his majority share in it to his nephews. Later, the bank failed to collect the required private capital for recapitalization and fell under the control of the Financial Stability Fund. Lamda Development, however, is stable in terms of development. The company owns the largest mall in Athens, The Mall Athens, the largest mall in Thessaloniki, Mediterranean World, and the seaside park Marina Flisvou in Athens.
For many years, Spiros Latsis himself has lived with his wife Margarita in Switzerland, where his main businesses are based.
