According to IKA’s manager Rovertos Spiropoulos, the data available so far reveal that the institute has lost over 6 million euro from the 244 cases of illegally paid benefits and aids. Another 260 cases are being investigated at present and it is expected that the total amount might triple to reach 18-20 million.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health is preparing to announce the exact number of citizens to receive benefits for sickness. A year ago, it became clear that many of them illegally receive money for nonexistent illnesses. Such is the case with the 700 "blind" people on the island of Zakynthos and the 595 cases of severe disability on the island of Kalymnos. It is ridiculous in the second case that based on these data, 30 per cent of the disabled people of all islands of the Dodecanese group live in the municipality of Kalymnos, while its population is only 8 per cent of the entire county.

The counting of retired civil servants is expected to continue by the end of September. Thus, the government will implement the measure for the inputting of pensioners in a central electronic system to reduce the losses from payment of pensions of already dead people to their relatives, causing huge losses to public funds.

Pensioners will have to appear in banks in person and their data will be automatically sent to the insurance funds. They will be linked in a common network and will have access to the data in the central computer. Thus, data can crosscheck and reveal cases of illegal receipt of pensions. According to unofficial estimates, the number of "dead souls" who are still receiving pensions is around 100,000.
