According to the Greek department of the international organization for human rights Amnesty International people seeking political asylum and illegal immigrants are not criminals. Greek authorities, however, treat them in this way, not respecting the rights, which international law provides them with. Currently, immigrants are being caught as soon as they arrive in the country without ascertaining whether it is needed. Arrests should be a very last resort. According to their figures, the Greek authorities recognized very small number of asylum seekers as refugees. Only 36 from a total of over 30 000 applications that were discussed last year had been granted political asylum, and another 128 have been granted subsidiary protection status.
