Following the expert report issued last summer, concerning the professional occupations that must be excluded from the list of hazardous professions, a newly-appointed commission will decide on which new occupations will be included in the list this summer. The main objective of the Ministry of Employment in Greece is for the new list to be enacted by 2010 and include the most recent entrants in the labor market.

The topic was discussed on a conference with members of the government and syndicate representatives present. According to the report prepared by the experts, everyone that was previously employed in an occupation characterized as hazardous (between 200 000 – 250 000 people) but has been reconsidered, will see wage cuts between ?50 and ?200 monthly. They will also have to work 5 additional years in order to retire and will have their pensions cut by up to 20%.

Some of the professions which are under consideration for exclusion include all drug and cosmetic manufacturing occupations, perfumery, veterinary pharmacy, ironers, washers, radio-technicians, waiters, bus controllers, supermarket cashiers, vegetable merchants from the Athens central market, attendants, confectioners and bakers and office workers at metal and petrol plants.

Among the occupations ready to join the list of hazardous jobs are: subway operators and people working in underground rooms of the subway, health-officers, stretcher-carriers in hospitals, nurses, nuclear medics, welders, casters, fire-vehicle drivers, underground communication officers, firemen and lifeguards, underground electric station officers, high-radiation occupations, night guards, part-time cleaners working for multiple employers and carriers in hotels.
