The position of the Lunar nodes in a birth horoscope is a major factor in human life. They show the "metabolism" of our lives - what we "consume" and how we "absorb" it. In this article I will discuss their movement in the horoscope, called the cycle of the nodal axis. 

Astrology lunar nodes have very specific movements caused by their astronomical basis. Ecliptic, the visible path of the sun, is perceived as stable and constant factor, this is why the moon's orbit looks as if it is slipping back to it. This slippage is the reason why to an observer from Earth the Lunar nodes move in a direction opposite to that of the Sun and Moon. Or in other words, the nodes are moving retrograde to the zodiac. Always. This is their normal movement. 

When using this term - retrograde - somehow the human mind automatically associates it with something negative. Similarly, when talking about retrograde phases of the planets such as Mercury and Venus, most astrologers believe it to be negative for any development. Many modern astrologers (and not only) believe that the retrograde planet is somehow blocked in its manifestation, because from Earth it seems to be moving in reverse. This is why it is very easy to fall into the trap of the superficial interpretation and to perceive it as something negative. Do not make an analogy between the word "retrograde" and backwards, degenerate, decadent, downward. The meaning is "going back". 

Everyone knows that in order to assess any situation in life, one should consider it first. And sometimes to relive it. And what do we do? We rewind everything mentally and “relive” it again. This is the mechanism of retrograde. And there is nothing decadent and degenerate in this. Indeed, there may be something which will deteriorate and go away forever. But even if and when this happens, it is because we have no need for it anymore. 

The retrograde motion of the Lunar nodes refers to a process through which we can not only revise our past, but also achieve a deeper sense of how our past is linked to our future and our basic needs. Human development is impossible to exist without this process of going back. This is why the Lunar nodes are the main factor in the horoscope, which I can directly connect to individual destiny and development. Because their retrograde movement means: "Let's go back to the source, to the past and to review our life and behavior”. Whatever the Lunar nodes in the birthday horoscope touch during their movement, it is always conditioned by our past, by our individual destiny. 

At the time of the birth of a person, the Lunar nodes are fixed in a particular zodiac sign and degree. In the years they travel through the zodiac and in order to return to the same position they had at the time of birth required are approximately 18.6 years or about 18 years and 7 months. This is why the 19^th, 38^th, 57^th and the 76^th year of our lives are marked by some tipping points. The years preceding them – the 18^th, 37^th, 57^th and 75^th - are time when we do something like a balance-sheet of the last 18 years and prepare for the next. From a purely psychological point of view, these are the years of new "birth". Performed is a gradual psychological readjustment, which often is not noticeable to people, carried away in their daily lives. They feel that something is wrong, a vague unease, dissatisfaction and even depression. Sometimes they find themselves not only in a personal crisis but also in a social one. What they do not realize is that they reset almost their entire mental process and their lives too. 

The midpoint of each of the major cycles is every 9 years. The interesting thing in it is that the transit North Lunar node “steps” on the South birth one and the transit South node steps on the North birth Lunar node. In astrological language this is called phase opposition of the nodes. These moments make it possible for a person to start "cleaning" his past and to come back to something omitted. And usually this is always accompanied by external events in life. This is why the 28^th, 47^th, and the 66^th year of our lives almost always carries some sort of radical change which is defined by the birth position of the lunar nodes. But in most cases it is related to our relationship with others as a whole and our social environment. 

So the cycle of lunar nodes blueprints the following years of a person’s life - 9, 19, 28, 38, 47, 57, 66 and 76. For some people it may continue to 85 and 95. From the years that I mentioned highly eventful are the 28^th, 47^th and the 66^th. 

In most cases, exactly those years of human life mark his "life story". Because usually during those years our environment changes – partners, circle of friends, colleagues, work environment, and social classes, in which we enter and go out of. Lunar nodes are tied primarily to the environment in which we live. This is our "street" with its architectural features and all the characters that inhabit it. Especially important is the period between 40 and 44 years of age when opposition occurs at the transit of Uranus to Uranus of the birth horoscope. This may be during the 40^th or 42^nd year – it is different for different people and it depends on the orbit of Uranus. This moment is very specific, since there is a switch, a stable and enduring shift in the themes of the Northern Moon node. 

Normally during our 42^nd and 44^th year we pass through the so-called midlife crisis. Most astrologers explain it with the opposition of Uranus with its birth position. The explanation is that in the years around 42 everyone appears to have a purely emotional feeling of increasing loneliness. Not just to feeling of being alone but actually being lonely. Increasing loneliness to the extent that it can hardly be sustained. As a result people are doing their best to overcome it and to escape from it. By engaging in vigorous social activity, rushing headlong into all sorts of adventures, degradation and threatening long-term relationships by entering into romantic adventures and experiments. The ways to get away from this loneliness are different for everyone. But this is not main worry. 

Despite the fact that the opposition of Uranus is the main factor for everything I described above, the reason is slightly different. At this time a shift is happening on the themes of the Northern Moon node. And the final withdrawal of the South Lunar node themes. In a more understandable language I would say that during this shift one has brought to the surface all natural inclinations and talents, as defined by the Southern node and has completed everything left unfinished. And he feels that where everything was familiar, where he always felt relaxed, where he could always find shelter, is gone. Imagine a street. At one end is the south node and in the other - the North. After birth, each person begins their journey on this street. Until about his 42^nd year, he gathers and brings to the surface all his abilities and talents as defined by the position of the South node, he solves certain problems. As they are always provoked in some way from the North node, since the movement is towards it. 

At the moment of conversion this process ends. We have taken everything we need, we have completed the unfinished and we no longer look back, because there's nothing there. This is pretty shocking when we understand it. Because despite the fact that we no longer have anything to do with the South node, it is not easy to detach from it completely. I will give an example with immigration. When a person goes away from his native home, he stays connected with it for a long period because there are some of his belongings (the south node). Over time he returns to take only those that are necessary for some reason (the north node). And so until one day, the habit takes him on his way to his native house again but suddenly he stops and realizes that there is nothing more to take. For most people this is a shocking and very lonely period. 

The only exception might be those who have the aspect of Saturn in their birth Moon - mostly conjunction, square, or opposition. This aspect that is so unloved, appears to be the greatest wealth during this critical age. Because for good or bad a person goes through most of his life in solitude. Do not take the latter literally. You might be surrounded by hundreds of people but the feeling of loneliness might never leave your side. 

It is not a common practice in astrology to calculate a dynamic horoscope for the opposition of Uranus to its birth position. But this is a very important moment exactly because of this shift. The most important thing in this map is the nodal axis. It occupies a specific position according to the house and sign and its importance is joined by the birth horoscope. 

Thus the 19^th year marks the period to our 38^th year with the fact that a person starts collecting useful things - defined by the South node, while getting acquainted with new ones defined by the North node. After the 38^th year, in a period of several years, including the opposition of Uranus to its own place, the collection process is completed and there is transition primarily to things guided by the North node. Our 28^th and 47^th year are peak and are characterized by bearing significant external events. The later years of life - 57, 66, 76 and 85 - also bring radical psychological changes. It is the mirror principle: 57, 47, 66 and 38, 76 and 28, 76 and 19.
