Georgeos Papakonstantinou, Minister of Economy, announced that an independent commission for assessing Greece’s financial condition will be created without further delay. After gathering and analyzing financial data, at the end of the year the commission will present a solution for the most urgent economical issues in Greece.
The idea for the new infrastructure came as a result of the meeting between Papakonstantinou and Georgeos Provopolos, manager of Bank of Greece. The Economics Minister said that due to “the huge discrepancy in the budget deficit data presented by the former government and that of the new one, it is imperative to initiate series of actions to prove validity of the data and ensure Greek citizens of the accuracy of the statistical data, on which the state’s economic policies are based.” The commission will be established with the cooperation of the Bank of Greece and its members will be representatives of the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research, the Labor Institute to the General Confederation of Greek Workers, the Center for Planning and Economic Research, as well as representatives of the Hellenic Bank Association.
Minister Papakonstantinou believes in the effectiveness of the initiative. According to him the commission will provide the government with the opportunity to make the correct decisions regarding the economic policies of the country and will increase the trust in Greece on the part of the Euro-commissioners. The minister also announced that the budget-2010 draft will be submitted for voting by the end of the week, and the bill for the spinning off of the Statistical Institute from the Ministry of Economy will be ready in 10 days.
