Greek cars with Bulgarian license plates

More Greek citizens owners of cars go to neighboring Bulgaria, to obtain license plates, maintaining the ownership of the vehicle, thereby avoiding road taxes and expensive insurances.

With a special payment, as it is called by the government, for cars over 2000 cubic centimeters and the increased tolls it is proved once again that the car from an essential need object has turned into a luxury good regardless of the price.

The crisis, which knocked on the Greek door, caused headaches for the leaders of the Treasury, who believe that one such action would raise substantial sums in the Treasury.

In practice, however, such a thing will not happen, since the Greek genius is prepared to make up another miracle. Moreover, many owners say that they knew that they had to pay some specific amounts two years ago when they bought their cars and now they have to pay amounts exceeding the initial amount with 400 percent.

Registration numbers and law suits...

Many owners are preparing to return their car license plates, something that is possible to be done as they say, because every family already has 2 and 3 cars.

Others intend to resort to European courts to seek justice, since they cannot do this in Greece, where there is no legal framework, and everything is done without any control.

Finally, there is a third solution that has already begun to be implemented mainly by those living in northern Greece. A study by zougla.gr shows that hundreds of Greek citizens now create their own companies in neighboring Bulgaria, in order to reduce the cost of using their cars.

Bulgaria in the game...

In particular, using special firms, they connect with people who know the tax regime in Bulgaria and quite legitimately, as they say, find a way of enabling those interested to drive a car with Bulgarian registration plates. In practice this means a reduction of annual expenses (tolls and insurance), up to one third of what a person would pay in Greece under the current regime. Quite simply, these firms issue documents to interested customers, make an inactive firm or show that rent is paid in Bulgaria and trigger the whole process. Subsequently necessarily is the opening of a bank account (even if the amount deposited is 200 euros) and for the person to have a health insurance.

The trap...

To accomplish this, the car should go to Bulgaria. Yet the still existing problem is that the car that changed its Greek license plates with Bulgarian, may return after years in Greece again with Greek license plates, if the necessary taxes are paid. The solution is not the best, so another proposal comes from Germany or again from Bulgaria where every Greek can buy a car and with the ownership document can again have Bulgarian license plates.

In all cases, the state will lose huge sums that will be taken abroad.
