Free entrance and museums open until midnight on the occasion of the International Museum Day

The festivities on the occasion of the International Museum Day which is celebrated on the 18th of May start this weekend, and the museums in the country will be open to the public that will have the chance to see them for free and some of them will be open until midnight. This year, the celebrations are held under the motto Museums and Memory and include events devoted to the history of museums, the relationship of memory with the history and identity, as well as to the contribution of Africa to the cultural development of the world.

The National Museum of History will restore the custom of "sacrifice" (May 17, at 9 pm). An educational program for children aged between 5 and 12 years on "The wedding rite from antiquity until today", May 22 from 11 am to 12 o’clock at noon and from 12:15 at noon to 1:15 pm.

The Acropolis Museum will be open from 8 am until midnight on May 18 and the entrance will be free. The museum will host the symphonic orchestra and the mixed choir at the Municipality of Athens at 8.30 pm.

The Benaki Museum on Piraeus Avenue will present an introduction to African art "I come from Ivory Coast," "Tales on the Moon" by Sasha Voulgari on May 14 from 11 am, and a congress on "Ideology, museology and architecture" from May 20 to 22.

The Museum of Cycladic Art will be open from 6:30 pm until midnight on May 14 and will arrange tours around the Museum's permanent collections, the visiting exhibition "The last grand tour. Modern leaders in Greece," and a course in art for adults. There will be tours and courses for children and adults on May 15 from 11 am to 5 pm.

On the night of the museums the Numismatic Museum in cooperation with the National Museum of Contemporary Art will show the digital film "The art of sleep" by the Koreans fromYoung - Hae Chang Heavy Industries in the courtyard of the Museum on May 14 at 8 pm. A lecture on "The archaeological journeys of Henry Schliemann" will be held on May 18 at 12 o’clock at noon.

The Byzantine and Christian Museum will celebrate the Museum Day with an event entitled "Wandering memory" by the painter Nadia Papatheodorou - May 19 at 8:30 pm. Within the project "9 articles, 9 unknown stories" the researchers of the museum will tour the visitors  among the stories that lie behind selected exponents from the permanent exhibition - May 22, at 9.30, 10.30, 11.30, 12.20, 13.30 h.

The National Museum of Contemporary Art organised the exhibition "Revelations" with audiovisual works from its collection, which offer different ways to examine the issues of memory and personal revelations - on May 18.

The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki in collaboration with the Musical School at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki – musical and theatre performance of folk songs, customs and rituals associated with spring, entitled "Spring," May 18 at 7.30 pm. The museum will be open from 8 am to 8 pm.

The Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki will present an exhibition of objects - personal values ​​that will make the visitors of the museum to tell their stories – May 15 and 18 at 12 o’clock at noon. There will also be an exhibition, film screenings and musical concert entitled: "Place and Memory: the place where the Museum of Byzantine Culture was built" and folk tales for adults from the myths and fairy tales studying and distribution centre on May 15 and 22.

The Archaeological Museum in Yoanena will present a thematic tour for the visitors and educational tour for students entitled "Rodopi, 16 years old" - May 18.

An event for people with special needs entitled "The excavations of the 19th century at the Acropolis in Athens" will be held at the Acropolis in Athens on May 18.

The Archaeological Museum in Navplio will hold an educational program for children from 4 to 8 years old, entitled "Pritt, armor and fourteen gold rosettes" - May 22.

A lecture entitled "Olympia. The history of its museums" will be held in ancient Olympia on May 18 at 7 pm.
