The demand for flights to Greek tourist destinations is huge, as confirmed by data of Eurocontrol and the Civil Aviation Authority. The island of Skiathos ranks first, with an increase of about 350% of the demand for flight slots to the airport of the island. The most popular destinations have also marked an increase: Mykonos - +40%, Santorini - +30%, Rhodes - +28%, Kefalonia -+26%, Iraklio - +25%, and Chania - +14%.

Data of the Athens airport for the first 4 months of the year show that 2014 will be a year of the return of flights and demand for air travel.

Both Greek and foreign airlines are enjoying an increase and are now expanding their schedules in order to win passengers. The fact that the increase in foreign arrivals in Greece is increasing is encouraging. The demand for travel within the country – a sector, which was seriously struggling last year - is also marking a revival.

Sky Express announced that it will operate flights between Thessaloniki and Skiathos 3 times a week as of 1 June.

According to commercial director of the company Yiannis Lidakis, the new flights are included in the framework of cooperation with the municipality of Thessaloniki for the tourist promotion of the city. The company already operates flights between Thessaloniki and Lemnos, Skyros, Ikaria, Chios, Mytilene, Rhodes and Samos. In addition, new flights from Volos to Mykonos, Mytilene and Iraklio will start as of 25 June.

Athens - New York

In parallel, as of today, 18 May, Athens will have a direct connection with New York for a few months, since Delta Air Lines will reinstate its summer schedule between the two cities. Such a connection has been missing in recent years, and passengers wishing to travel on this route had to do so via a transfer, where most of the demand has been covered by Turkish Airlines.

200,000 passengers for a year on the Athens-Dubai route

Arab companies Emirates and Etihad Airways are also planning an increase in flights from Athens in the summer. They will increase the frequency of flights from Athens to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, respectively, in order to meet the high demand.

The line of Emirates, connecting Athens with Dubai is one of the successful and profitable routes. From 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014, 191,252 passengers travelled on this route. 92,711 passengers flew from Dubai to Athens, as well as 98,541 passengers from Athens to Dubai.
