In turn, Dilma Rousseff, being the current president of Brazil to this 31 December, promised to increase the social assistance and integration scheme "Bolsa Familia" to 10% as early as May. At present, 36 million Brazilians benefit from it, although the economy has stalled since the beginning of the year. Aesiu Neves, who is known as more "business friendly", is perceived by the financial markets as a man who can restore the positions of the Brazilian economy but for this purpose, his political programme is not composed around the social integration of the poorer parts of the population.
Therefore, the vote on 26 October separated the largest country in Latin America almost evenly into two halves, by geographical location and social class. The support for Neves prevailed in the richer southern, southeastern and central western parts of Brazil, whereas the Amazon north and the poorer northeastern part supported Rousseff. The Workers’ Party won 51.4% of the vote, whereas the Social Democratic Party ranked second with 48.5%. Having won a second term as President by a narrow margin over her opponent, Dilma Rousseff promised to be "a much better President than I was previously." Brazil’s Iron Lady will have to face not only the creeping inflation and slowing economic growth but also the declining gross domestic product that fell by 0.6% from March to June alone.
