Athens is one of the 50 most popular Christmas destinations in Europe, according to a study conducted by the travel website trivago.gr. The ranking is based on the average price per hotel room and the average stay of visitors over Christmas.
Athens ranks 24th with an average price of 74 euro per night and average stay of 6 days during the Christmas holidays.
The capitals of the United Kingdom, France and Germany are at the head of the list with an average price per night of 177, 140 and 84 euro and average stay of 6 days.
Classic Christmas destinations such as Vienna (113 euro per night), Budapest (74 euro) and Florence (96 euro) rank down on the list but still before Athens. Cities like Copenhagen (118 euro per night and 6 days), Strasbourg (152 euro and 4 days) and Dresden (96 euro and 5 days) follow the Greek capital in the ranking.
In most cities the average stay of visitors at Christmas is 6 days and prices are in the range 74-177 euro per night, London being the most expensive destination in this respect. The average price per night in a Greek hotel is among the most affordable and competitive ones, despite the increased visitor interest in Athens at Christmas. With an average price of 74 euro per night the city ranks among the cheapest destinations on the list after Valencia, Krakow and Malaga.
Athens is the only Greek city on the list whereas other countries participate in the ranking with many cities. Spain has 13 destinations that occupy different positions in the ranking, Italy 7 and Germany 6.
Interesting is the fact that the most expensive Christmas destination is one city in Spain and one in Italy. In particular, in Cortina d'Ampezzo, the average price per night is 385 euro and in the Spanish Costa Adeje, it amounts to 275 euro.
