Eurobank was founded in 1990. In 1996 it bought Interbank, and a year later it also bought the branch network of Credit Lyonnais Grece SA. In 1998 the bank bought the controlling stake of the Athenian bank, and together with CEH it purchased 18.4% of the shares of the Worker's Bank. A year later the Crete bank was transferred to Eurobank, and the activities of Eurobank and the Athenian bank merged. In 2000, it merged with the Worker's Bank.

Piraeus Bank was founded in 1916. In 1998 it took over the functions of Chase Manhattan in Greece for the purchase of Macedonia-Thrace Bank and the small specialized Bank Credit Lyonnais Hellas. Early in 1999 it acquired control over Chios Bank and took over the activities of National Westminster Bank in Greece. In 2000 it consolidated its banking activities in Greece through the takeover of Macedonia-Thrace Bank and Chios. In early 2002, Piraeus Bank acquired control over ΕΤΒΑ bank and took it over in 2003. In 2012, it acquired part of the Agricultural Bank and reached a market share of 19% of the deposits and 16% of the funding.

As far as mergers and acquistions are concerned, over the past 20 years the National Bank has limited its activity to domestic cases which strengthen its leading position.
