The most controversial museum in Bulgaria

The Museum of Socialist Art has a hall for temporary exhibitions, which constantly houses paintings in impressive sizes. One of them is "Georgi Dimitrov at the Leipzig trial" by Peter Mikhailov which, until a few years ago, was kept along with other works of art in the cellars of the National Assembly and the National Art Gallery. Currently, the Museum presents the exhibition "Europe. SEE - recorded memories" of Goethe-Institut, which involves artists from all over Europe and their vision and perception of the Eastern Bloc.
The Museum of Socialist Art is the first step towards the interpretation of socialism in Bulgaria as part of its history. However, Bulgarian society still feels the lack of a museum of socialism in general to present different aspects of Bulgarian life at that time, starting with household items, following the example of the exhibition at the Museum of the GDR in Berlin, and ending with the methods and repressions of the secret service. The spirit of socialism still hovers in modern Bulgaria as not all the secrets of the totalitarian regime have been revealed or if they are clear, they are just mentioned incidentally.
