This years’ international day of the poetry March 21st will be dedicated to the Greek political poetry. In this connection the National books center is organizing as it is every other year, a number of events which aim at making Greek poetry and its authors more popular.

The political topics in the Greek poetry were always taking the leading place in this diverse generic literature area. From Solomos and Kalvos to Palamas and Sikelianos, from Cavafy and Varnalis to Seferis and Ritsios, from Anagnostakis and Patrikios to the contemporary poets, the political element in its various interpretations is an integral part of the poetical anthropology of Greece.

The already traditional cooperation between the National books center and the Music hall will show again in the musical presentation of political poetry with the participation of Maria Faranduri and Zacharias Karunis who will perform favorite melodies under the direction of Vasilis Nikolaidis on March 20th at 20:30.

Along with this the big campaign for making the poetry popular throughout the public transportation, which will be “flooded” with poems from March 19th to April 20th will be carried out again. Also in April will be released in circulation a series of 12 phone cards, dedicated to the World poetry day and in one year time each month one card will be released.

In the celebrations of the World poetry day will also take part the Benaki museum with an evening dedicated to Nikiforos Vretakos. This will happen on March 21st at 17:30. Besides this from March 21st to April 20th in the central building of the archive of Nikiforos Vretakos there will be held an exhibition of pictures and first issues of the Greek author.
