Top 16 of the European league

A surprise for the Greek basketball brought the draw for the Top 16 of the European league which listed the teams of Panathinaikos and Maroussi in the same group. Besides with each other the two Greek teams will have to challenge the strength of the teams of Partizan and Barcelona, which makes their task very uneasy. (Even though for the European champion Panathinaikos, which was in the second strongest group it was expected to be in a group together with a team like Barcelona). An easy draw couldn’t really be expected when the 16 best teams of Europe are taking part in the draw. The luckiest team turned to be Olympiakos which is listed in a group together with Caja Laboral (Spain), Khimki (Russia) and Cibona (Croatia). Olympiakos deffinately has greater chances of victory at the time of the cross games on the playoffs as the teams in its group are weaker than those in the group of Panathinaikos. The white and red team could be sure that on their way they would not meet a dangerous force of the European basketball…

The teams will play according to the system everyone against everyone with exchange of hosts and for the quarterfinals will only qualify the first two teams from each group.

At the quarterfinals will meet the teams of the E and F group as well as the teams of G and H group. More interesting is expected to be the battle between the teams of E and F groups.

The first two teams of the playoffs will qualify automatically for the Final four stage. On the way to the Final four the teams will have the privilege to play on their own field. And so will meet the teams of the E and F group as well as the teams of G and H group. More interesting is expected to be the battle between the teams of E and F groups.

The games for the Top 16 stage will start on January 27th and will end on March 11th, 2010. On March 23rd will start the playoffs out of which will become clear the four teams which will play for the final four between May 7th and 9th 2010 in Paris and will fight for the title European Champion.

Here is how the groups are formed:
