Terrorists blew up a newspaper office

Free expression has never been easy. Unfortunately, in a European Union member state such as Greece and in the 21st century, independent thinking is also a problem. Not for the government, not even for a large part of society, but for the leftist organization "Anti-capitalist Action" that could not swallow the policy of the free newspaper "Athens Voice" and blew up its offices in quite a gentleman-like manner. The reason for the terrorist attack was the fact that the newspaper had openly supported the idea of shops opening on Sundays and of the so-called "white nights" when shopping centres stay open until late in the evening.
In a manifesto entitled "Black Sundays, Red Nights" the group that struggles against capitalism accuses the media saying that it "participates in the government propaganda to put an end to Sunday rest and supports the free market that drains the power of workers." According to the perpetrators, the attack had caused minor damage compared to the aggressive behaviour of the state against the workers and the unemployed.

As stated by chief newspaper editor Yiannis Nenes, the fire had broken out at around 6:40 am on Thursday. The front door of the building that houses the newspaper office was open and the whole newsroom burnt. No explosive was found in the room and the incendiaries had probably used inflammable liquid. The prompt intervention of the fire brigade prevented the flames from spreading out of the newspaper office and damaging other rooms in the building.
