The landslide of the cliffs has happened as a result of natural phenomena and not because of the blasts of the cliffs made with the purpose of building a tunnel through the mountain close to Tembi. This claims the company “Egeo Highway” in an announcement published together with the consortium for the construction of the tunnel. According to the company “Researches prove that the vibrations of the trucks and air-forces’ planes passing through there are a lot greater than those produced by the construction activities for the tunnel, which are carried out at a distance of 900 meters of the place of the landslide.

The company also promises that in the next week they will present the necessary applications and at the moment when dates are set to receive the all the required licenses they will present the terms of execution of all the activities for cleaning and securing the road through the valley.

On the other part the geotechnical chamber of Central Greece located in Larissa came up with a statement that it was not just one factor causing the landslide of the cliffs near Tembi. According to the geo-technicians there were geological, geotechnical and morphological conditions, however the natural phenomena as well as the human activities contributed.

Who is responsible for the landslide at the Tembi passage and who will take the economic responsibility, will most probably will be decided by an international committee as it seems there are several disputable opinions.

“Egeo Highway” company “washed their hands” by saying that the landslide could not be avoided and is cause by the whims of nature. Representatives of the company informed they did not secure the cliffs because the government and the Ministry of infrastructure in particular prohibited them to. This was unofficially rejected by the ministry says “Katimerini” newspaper.

The company had to suggest another solution and this does not make it innocent says an employee of the Ministry. Possibly however there is a second document, on which the company “Egeo Highway” will rely. It is signed by the present Ministry of environment. In an indirect manner the Ministry of environment gives them a green light to postpone the activities on securing the cliffs due to ecological and environmental reasons.

If this is really true, the ministry will also have to take responsibility, continues the same employee. What has to be decided and settled yet is what would be the terms to re-establish the traffic through the passage, but also who will take responsibility for the death of the Italian engineer.
