Prisoners in Grevena are on strike

The hunger strike in Grevena prison continues for sixth day. “Initiative for prisoners rights” are standing against the inhuman conditions of the detained.

The organization is protesting because the correctional officers in Grevena are treating prisoners “without any respect for their dignity and human rights.” Also the prisoner’s requests for leave, as provided by the Code of correctional homes, are being ignored or rejected without a reason.

In August 2008 a special report of the Greek Ombudsman refers to the application of the procedure for taking leave from prison and a year and a half later the situation has not changed. Moreover, prisoners are forced to buy products of first necessity, because their basic needs are not met, and this leads to "tragic consequences", as many of them cannot afford such expense.

Also, the organization reported that there is lack of medical staff in the prison. Inmates are ready with their complaints against some specific officers. They have filed their claims officially to the Minister of Justice, but so far there is still no response from the ministry.

“Initiative for prisoners rights” is a movement that deals mainly with the conditions in prisons and its main purpose is to point out that sending a person in prison means only his deprivation of liberty. The organization started operating in the beginning of May 2006 after an incident in cell number 80 in Koridalos prison, where fire burst out and four people died. During the incident the water in that wing of the prison was stopped, and the prison officers intervened half an hour after the outbreak of the fire.
