The Ministry of Transportation and Communication announced new measures, which will modernize taxi services.

One of those measures is to increase the tariffs – day and night on three six-month periods. In more detail – the daily tariff of ?0.36 will increase to ?0.48 in May, to ?0.60 in Novermber, and to ?0.72 in May 2010. The double tariff of ?0.68 per kilometer will increase to ?0.84 during the first six months, to ?1.05 during November, and to ?1.20 in May 2010, which means that there is an 2.7% increase every time.

The Ministry together with the National Polytechnic University Metzovio are researching the probability of taxis using new routes, which are intended for the busses just like it is done in other European capitals.

As it was specified by the ministry, this measure will be applied when the taxi is driving a passenger and will be valid from July 15th and on. The taxi will not be allowed to stop, pick up and drop off clients when driving in this lane.

Also, the price for ordering a taxi over the phone, which is now ?2.80, will also increase from three to five Euros, so the competition between the different companies can be kept.

On their hand, the Taxi Drivers Federation agreed to equip each taxi with a GPS system, so their movement and security can be controlled. This modernization measure will be financed by the State.

The GPS will be activated by a special card, which will have all the information about the driver, the owner of the car, it will print out a receipt, it will show the shortest route for servicing the client and it will contribute to the fight against illegal taxis.

Also, the name of the driver will be written on a card, which will be placed on the back of his seat and in front, where it can be visible to all passengers.
