Pre-term elections in Northern Cyprus

Around March 29th, pre-term elections are expected in the Turkish part of Cyprus. The decision of the final date will be decided on January 6th 2009. This became evident by the statement of the leader of the Turkish Republican Party Ferdi Sabit Soyer cited by the Cyprian media. The Turkish Republican Party is part of the governing coalition in Northern Cyprus together with Free-Reforms Party of Tourgav Avdji, who said that the decision for the pre-term elections was taken with the consensus of the governing coalition and that his party is ready to participate in them.

The General Secretary of the National Unity Party Naim Chaoushoglou said that his party has been boycotting the parliament meetings and has been insisting for pre-term elections, so he is happy by the taken decision. Similar were also the words of Serdar Denktash, who is expecting the pre-term elections to be as soon as possible. According to a public opinion survey in northern Cyprus most likely the winner of the next elections will be the National Unity Party of Naim Chaoushoglou.

In his New Year speech, the leader of the Cyprian Turks Mehmed Alli Talat said that he is expecting 2009 with optimism and the island’s unification solution to the negotiations with the Cyprian Greeks. Talat said that a new era is coming for the communication between the two parts of the island since the election of Dimitris Hristofias for president of the South part of Cyprus.
