Greek diplomacy is working hard on the organization of a top meeting between the OSCE countries this spring in Athens. The meeting will give grounds for a direct meeting between USA and Russia presidents Barack Obama and Dmitri Medvedev, the “Elefteros Tipos” announces in today’s issue. As grreporter.info has already informed you, in January Greece takes over the chairmanship of OSCE, and it is a goal for Athens to organize a meeting between all the 56 member states of the organization during its presidency.

The last meeting of this kind was last held in 1999 in Istanbul and it normally requires great deal of diplomatic preparation. According to reliable sources of “Elefteros Tipos,“ the Greek ministry of foreign affairs has been working for months now on the organization of the meeting. Moscow does not conceal that it would rather the meeting took place 2010, under Kazakhstan presidency; however Washington frowns upon this idea, which increases the odds for Athens. “Direct meeting between Barack Obama and Dmitri Medvedev, hosted by Kostas Karamanlis will make big worldwide news,” sources from the Greek ministry of foreign affairs claim.

According to those sources, the decision of Greece whether to hold the OSCE top meeting or not, will be confirmed January 15, when Dora Bakoyanni, minister of foreign affairs, lays out the priorities of the Greek presidency in the organization’s headquarters in Vienna. Until then Greek diplomacy’s actions will be a well guarded secret.
