The present contract for the construction and maintenance of the continuation of the Attiki highway is canceled due to incompatibility of the project with the regulatory framework of the region in the part between Mesogion and Kalivia. The minister of infrastructure, transport and networks Dimitris Reppas announced that the new government has a plan for convoking a working group which will prepare by the beginning of the summer of 2010 a project for the concession of the road artery.

During a meeting with journalists the minister announced that the ministry will also start officially to examine the matter related to the renewal and reconstruction of the “Katseli” airport in Heraklion on the island of Crete. The main problem, due to which currently the project has not entered in an active phase, is the delay of the decision of some administrative matters related to the local authorities.

Minister Reppas also stated that the new government has found many problems after the government of New democracy, which had approved projects without having the necessary financing. Currently the projects which were stopped as there are no funds for them, are at the amount of 2,34 billion euro. The minister underlined that a part of these projects have been approved by the previous government just before the parliament elections in October.

According to data made public by the deputy minister of transportation and infrastructure Giannis Magriotis the public orders and initiatives at the amount of about 800 million euro were approved without having prepared in advance planned budgets and secured financing. As an example from the ministry pointed out the public order for the construction and repairs of the highway Tiva – Iliki for which a budget of 100 million euro have been granted, however there is no progress of the project since months. Minister Reppa also added that in 2010 500 million euro have been set aside for the financing of small municipal projects in the core of the country for development and rehabilitation of the infrastructure in the countryside.
