With every passing year the amount of corruption in Greece is increasing. According to a Public Issue research done on behalf of the international organization "Transparency International" the micro-level of corruption in Greece is estimated to be €787 million.

This is the amount families have paid "under the table" to be serviced in the public sector. In previous years - in 2007 this amount was €639 million and in 2008 - €748. For one year recorded is an increase of money given for "bribes" with €39 million.

According to the data, cases in which there are filed complaints that public employees have requested a bribe are 9.3%, while those in the private sector are 5.3%. The average amount given was in a bag "under the table" in the form of illegal payment to public employees is about €1355 or a total of €462 million given by 340 788 families. Illegal rate in private employees is about €1671, or a total of €325 million given by 194 213 families.

Noted is a decrease in public sector micro-corruption in comparison with 2008, while the private sector micro-corruption has increased. Most corrupt are doctors followed by urbanization employees, tax offices, the pension fund IKA and the municipalities.

In the private sector corruption cases are most often recorded again in private clinics, doctors' offices, law firms, banks, driving schools, engineering companies, construction companies and real estate firms. The study reports the amount of micro-corruption without including cases in major international companies.

Interesting is the position of Greeks on corruption - even though they participate in illegal exchanges, they seek for the law to be implemented. 97% of respondents said they would pay to take their driver's license exams. 96% of respondents said they are willing to give money under the table to tax inspectors in order for them to fix their debts; to pay an employee of Urban Development in order to obtain a building permit or to pay a police officer in order not to be fined. 88% of respondents believe that it is normal to trigger their "connections" in order to find a good job for their relatives or to pay something extra to a doctor in order to be cared for better.

The study was conducted through telephone interviews of 6 122 people in six months.
