It combines mountains and the sea, as well as harmony, tranquillity and beaches for every taste. If you are a fan of fish dishes, here in heaven for you, since Karystos is one of the largest fishing centres in Greece.

Located in the southern part of the island of Evia, it stands out for its modern design. Did you know that public buildings and public squares were planned by Bavarian engineer Mirbach at the request of King Otto? For this reason the city was named Otonopolis in 1848 and was renamed Karystos in 1862.

Does anyone want fish?

Since ancient times the area has been famous for its fish. You will find delicious and rare seafood at good prices. Local cuisine and products promise an unforgettable gastronomic experience. Karystos is also known for its local cheeses and meat. Be sure to try the traditional "kourkoubines" which are among the most delicious pastries.

Bourtzi

Visit the old Venetian fortress near the port. It is believed that it was built in the mid-13th century. It was restored by the Archaeological Society in 1960.

Yokaleion Cultural Centre

It is located opposite Bourtzi and houses the Archaeological Museum, the exhibits of which show the rich history of the area from prehistoric times to the Roman era.

Castello Rosso

The red fortress Castello Rosso is located above the village of Grabia. It was built in 1205 by the Latins, after the fall of Evia, at the site of the ancient acropolis of Karystos.

On the beach

Karystos has many beautiful beaches and countless coves near the city. The beach of Psili Amos is well known and favoured by the young. It is protected from the winds, with very fine sand and warm calm waters, and it is ideal for families. Alikes beach, also known as Kavos, is 5.5 km from the city centre. It offers fishing and water sports.

If you are a fan of diving, choose Bouro beach, 10 km from the city. The depth is ideal for diving. In the western part of the beach you will find the statue of the centaur with the nymph.

How to get there

There are daily ferries from the port of Rafina to Marmari, from where you can reach Karystos in 10 minutes by car. From Chalkida, it can be reached by car in less than 2 hours.
