GRReporter’s readers wish for lower taxes and fewer crooks in Greece in 2012

The New Year started in Greece pretty rapidly. In fact, even during the holidays its citizens could not heave a sigh of relief from the bad news such as the price increase in electricity, the next cut in salaries and pensions and dozens of additional taxes. Therefore the wishes of the people gathered around the festive table, which this year was much more scarce than in the past, were more than modest. "Let us be healthy and have a job" was the most commonly heard wish that compelled also the social media on the Internet.

In early December GRReporter asked its readers to send their greetings to Greece. What did they wish for it?

If you combine the results from the vote in the poll by the readers of the three language versions of the site, we see that most of them have chosen the wish "lower taxes and fewer crooks". Fewer strikes and more work is the second choice, and in third place is the wish for a new government to stabilize the country. Readers of GRReporter apparently share the unwillingness of the majority of Greeks for their country to leave the eurozone and therefore the choice "new currency" follows the others with a great difference in the number of votes. As expected, the last choice turned out to be the wish for many gold medals without doping at the Olympic Games in London.

Nevertheless, the results in the three surveys did not follow the same order. Let us start with the vote in the Bulgarian version of the site. More than half of the readers, or 52 percent wished for the Greeks to work more and strike less. Lower taxes and limiting the crooks came second with 20 percent of the votes, followed by the wish for a new government, chosen by 17 percent of voters. 7 per cent declared they were in favour of exiting the eurozone and the introduction of a new currency, and 4 percent of the readers opted for success at the Olympics - .

Unlike the Bulgarian, in the English and Greek version of the site the first wish in the choice of our readers was to save the Greeks from many taxes and crooks who are robbing the state. The votes are respectively 40 and 46 per cent. 26 percent of the English-speaking readers wished for the Greeks to work more, to get a new cabinet - 21 percent, to leave the euro - 12 percent and only 2 percent wished them gold medals at a sporting level.

The second in the chart of the readers of the Greek version with 34 percent of the votes was the wish for a new government, to stabilize the country and to inspire hope and courage to its citizens. The new currency, fewer strikes and Olympic gold medals are incomparably far back in the chart and they were preferred respectively by 8, 7 and 5 percent of readers who voted.

Thank you for your participation and we wish you all good health and prosperity in 2012. And because for most of us the business year has already started, the subject of our new poll is political. We look forward to your answers to the question: Will PASOK manage to emancipate itself from the Papandreou family?
