There are several spots in the Athens’ center where everyone can turn on their laptop and surf the Internet at any time of the day. The athenswifi web which started as a project of the Information Society a few years ago is still functioning and offers free Internet access to all.

The free wireless Internet connection is available in the center of Athens on Syntagma Square near Tisio (the pedestrian zone along Agios Pavlos Str., Asomaton Square and the station of the electric train) as well as on the Kodziya Square in front of Athens town hall. The other favourite place to surf the Internet is the area of Gazi – the Technopolis cultural center and the gardens around the Keramikos Square and the Korean market.

The access is quite easy, but you must select the wireless network (SSID) athenswifi from the wireless network options of your computer and write the number that will appear on your browser when you try to enter some site. The wireless connection speed is fast and the line capacity for each area with Internet is 8Mbps (OTEnet).

In addition to the four squares there is Wi-Fi HotSpot at the National Research Institute where many scientists, researchers and students meet and work of. The wireless network of the institute (www.broadbandcity.gr) is available from 9 am to 19 pm every day and covers the first floor of the institute, the library K. T. Dimaras and reading room of the National Archiving Center.

Over 106,600 people made over 409,300 connections to the Internet since the launch of the athenswifi project three years ago. The transferred data is over 14 TB.

Tip:

AWMN - information on how you can have free Internet access is available on the website of the wireless network of Athens (www.athenswireless.net).
