A huge fire has been raging since this morning near Afidnes.

Substantial forces from the fire-fighting service have been sent in the area and the thick smoke from the fire has embraced many areas of Attica region.

35 fire trucks and 100 fire-fighters have arrived at the place, assisted by 37 people from the ground forces. 8 aircraft and 2 helicopters have also been involved in the fire extinguishing, as well as dozens of volunteers by 14 cars of the local government.

In the last two hours the situation has improved, although there is a danger the fire to renew due to the strong wind blowing in the area.

The fire broke out at 4:00 a.m., and the flames reached quickly a mile and a half, as they also endangered houses.

More specifically the fire had reached Trapezoundos Street, municipality of Agios Stefanos, near to the toll payment point.

A large front was localized near Drosopigi, Kryoneri municipality, where forests of dense vegetation are burning.

As Dionysios Deputy Mayor Nikos Pepas told before ΝΕΤ TV channel, the fire has broken out in Drosopigi and has passed on both sides of the Athens-Lamia highway.

The fire in Agios Stefanos is now thoroughly under control, while the one in Drosopigi is still burning, but with no houses being threatened.

Earlier, the Athens-Lamia highway from Varibobi to Kapanrditi was closed in both directions, but now the car traffic is normalized.

Fires in Evia and Kefalonia

A fire is raging in a wooded area near Moulteri, Kimi municipality, Evia. 32 fire-fighters by 14 fire trucks, an aircraft and a helicopter are fighting the firestorm.

Meanwhile, a fire is burning again in a wooded area in the region of Kambitsa, Kefalonia municipality. 17 fire-fighters by 8 cars, 7 people from the ground forces, 10 volunteers, two cars of the local government and an aircraft are taking part in the extinguishing of this fire.

An increased danger of fires

According to the map for fire risk prediction, issued by the Ministry of Public Order, today, Saturday, there is a very high danger of fires (4th grade) in the following areas:

- Attica

- Boeotia

- Evia (central and southern)

- Argolida

- Ilia (Pyrgos, Ancient Olympia, Andravida, Pinios municipality) and

- Corinthia.
