Disadvantaged people ask for the right to a just life

People with physical disability also attended the rally. For them the biggest problem was to adapt in the society and the lack of facilities tailored to their special needs. A woman from Drama admitted that only this year before the elections they have begun to build alleys for blind people on the sidewalks. This convenience was introduced in Athens six years ago, when the Greek capital was preparing for the Olympic Games in 2004. "The issues about the accessibility of public places are many, but this is not the biggest problem in Greece," said a middle-aged man, who because of his illness has spent a lifetime in a wheelchair. "And today, if on one side of the sidewalk there is a ramp, then the other side they have forgotten to put it - so if I get up, I can not get off then." According to him the real problem is that society and the state as a whole are blind for the problems of disability. "In the questionnaire for the Census in 2010 for the first time was missed the question 'Do you have a family member with a disability?'. This means that the state does not even want to know how many are the disabled in the country, not to mention the problems they have," he said with resignation.

Lack of opportunities for professional development is another concern that torments the people with physical disorders and their families. "I pay for a psychologist who provides psychological support to my son, because nobody wants to hire him, but he is very capable with his hands" admitted the father of a 27-year-old boy in a wheelchair. He explained that his son has aspirations and desire for fulfillment, but the conditions in the city and prejudices of the people are an everyday problem that he encounters.

The event was attended by representatives of the Union of diabetics who were protesting against the cutting of the pages with free medicines, among which is the vital for them insulin. Problems of diabetics are associated with high prices of medicines, the lack of effective social policy and the overall indifference of the state towards their problems. "When healthcare and social security become a trade union demands, it means that the state is not going well," said for GRReporter a representative of the Union.

The rally of disabled people continued with a march to the exit of the Parliament on Syntagma Square, where according to the rules of public order, the protesters met the special police forces for riot control. In the planned strikes and rallies, their presence is required around the parliament building. There was no tensions between protesters and representatives of the law, but nevertheless the picture of people in wheelchairs standing in front of the policemen with their helmets on, shields and batons in the belt was surreal.
